A great fly box!,
13 January 2012
By: DaveR
from Des Moines IA
"This is the second one of these that I have purchased. For holding your hackled dry flys they are the best. And I also like the fact that you can adjust the compartments to adapt to the size of flys you need to carry. I have also used this box as a "minimalist" for those days when I don't need to carry multiple fly boxes."

Great Fly Box,
02 November 2011
By: Chris195
from Kent, United Kingdom
"I purchased the large version of this box, I mainly use it for storing flys, and top up my fly box from it. It has a water proof seal that works well and the flys stay in the section you put them in. this is a good quality box for this price so i purchased another one."

"The box is heavy and the latch much inferior.Being waterproof (maybe) counts for little unless you are terribly clumsy. The old Rust-Proof series was superior.Cheaper boxes serve just as well."

so much more practical,
30 September 2011
By: CWat
"If you can't see through the lid of a fly box you'll always be riffling feverishly through a collection of them wondering which one contains your favourite fly for this situation. These boxes are so practical because they are durable (unlike many transparent boxes) and you can adjust the compartment size to cope with all sizes of fly. Plus they are waterproof. And inexpensive."

"Bought a couple of these boxes twenty years ago for Trout fishing and used them exclusively until I misplaced one (or someone perminently borrowed it). The large box I use to store surplus flies, spinners, weights, floats, etc. The medium box I modified by removing most of the dividers (left one small section for strike indicators and a few weights) with a Dremel tool and inserting foam fly board. This set-up works great! Being able view everthing in the box at a glance is a big plus for me. The boxes are sturdy and will last for many years"

"These boxes allow you to divide flies without having those obnoxious spring clips on each compartment--good if you have spring averse fingers--bad if you have a habit of dropping your open box mid-stream. I know they give the dimensions in the description but the large one is really big--too big to easily fit in a vest or belt pack pocket, but great for storage, or in a boat bag. I have never had any leaks and tend to fall fairly often (looking for rises instead of rocks)."

"Originally purchased because the box size fit my vest. Also like to clear plastic so you can see the flies. Was surprised that water gets in so easily . This was a bit disappointing since there is a gasket that I though would hold back water. I do fall ( at least ) once a year and had hoped this box would keep flies dry . Does not . Also , one box , the clasp snapped off. Orvis salesperson has told me he would replace , no problem. So the good is , adjustable , clear, good size , no nonesense design, Bad, leaks"

"I have a small and large adjustable fly boxes. both of them were bought years ago. A common theme in my reviews of Orvis products is that they are usually with me for many years. I always take good care of my gear, but Orvis simply engineers products that last.
This box is a wonderful example of Orvis quality in craftsmanship. These boxes are virtually indestructable and the rubber gasket does a remarkable job of keeping out water. I love the adjustable compartments as I can switch the large box from a saltwater box to a box that can separate several delicate dry patterns.
I often use the lightweight floating boxes when I am packing a full vest, however, when I am using a single box chest pack, I use the adjustable box.
They also make a great storage case for the off season as the gaskets keep any dampness out.

"I have used these for years and think they are great. They are waterproof and are large enough to hold many flies yet fit in a vest with ease. However, after several years, around 10, they start to come apart. I checked with my dealer to get them replaced and found out the shipping expense was more than it was worth to replace them. I think they are great but should last longer. I have at least 6 of them.

"About ten years ago I was wading Northern California’s Pit river early one season when I lost my footing and went for a bit of a swim. I drifted into some vegetation covered rocks at the tail of a pool and regained my footing. As I was pulling myself to my feet I noticed one small algae covered rock that seemed to have an unusually regular rectangular shape. I picked it up to investigate, plucked away the plant that had a firm grip on one corner and wiped away a little bit of the encasing slime to reveal a man made surface below. So I put the thing in the back pocket of my vest and later set it in the bed of my truck to dry out. After it dried out I scraped off the brown and green scum to reveal a small Orvis Adjustable Fly Box that was still latched shut. I opened it up and found three dozen flies inside, all in pristine condition. No moisture and no rust. The metal pin in the hinge was tarnished a bit but after the organic material was cleared away the hinge worked just fine. I have no idea how long that box had been in the river and on the bank, but given the amount of algae encrusting the thing, it must have been there at least since the previous fall. That box had protected its contents and is still protecting flies for me a decade later. I purchased several other boxes in various sizes and have used them for all sorts of flies when I wanted to ensure that they will stay dry. I find the medium size great for storing bushy dries, indicators, panfish poppers, and small streamers as well as protecting my flies when wading the surfzone where it is difficult to keep anything dry. I use the large size for larger streamers, saltwater patterns, and bass bugs. The small and medium sizes fit into my shirt pockets and chest packs and the large size fits well into float tube pockets or boat bags. The clear material makes for quick identification of the contents. I use other gear besides fly tackle and have found these boxes useful for carrying worm weights, hooks, snaps and swivels too. In addition to their utility, these boxes have been very durable. I have never broken one despite more than a few drops and other mishaps."

Simple and solid,
20 August 2008
By: lionheart

"I've used these fly boxes for more than ten years in all sizes - for dries and for streamers and for soft hackles - and I keep coming back to them every season, regardless of the fancier or more complicated ones I get as gifts through the year. They're indestructible. They're uncomplicated. They're perfectly functional. This is not the box for you if you need spring-loaded little trap doors. It's not the box for you if you need fancy names or complicated "systems". It's not for you if you need expensive status symbols. It is the box for you if you want something that lasts, is completely functional and useful and is a great value. I label mine with a Sharpee with each month of the season, load them up in the winter with month-specific flies and grab them and go the rest of the year. Simple and solid - thanks for a great product."

Best dry fly box!,
22 January 2008
By: pescator7
from New York, NY
"This box is a classic for a good reason. The medium and large boxes are the perfect depth to hold dry flies without crushing hackles or wings. The adjustable dividers make this box fully customizable. This was one of the first fly boxes I ever purchased and have never found another that has a higher capacity for the size and weight. The only drawback is that with the lid open, all of the compartments are exposed. A good gust of wind or a slip of your hand and its possible to dump the entire contents into the river. If you like to carry a lot of flies, this is the box that will get it done."
