"Although the coat is handsome, very warm, and well made, some of its features are disappointing. The zipper is incredibly frustrating, as it often malfunctions. In addition, the pockets are not sufficiently large for a pair of gloves or earmuffs (without fear of tearing the coat). A coat this substantial should also have at least two smaller, perhaps internal, pockets, for items like a train ticket and a small cell phone or small MP3 player."

"Coat is great but the zipper is not. Zipper should be bigger -thicker gauge-and should go up and down as many heavy duty coats have.
Overall the zipper is the only issue I have to complain about."

"I have had this coat for nearly four years and have only worn it occasionally as the Texas climate didn't get too cold. Now living in NY, this quality product has shown it's capability in colder climates. Fit and finish are second to none in addition to the timeless styling. This seems to be more of work of art than something worn everyday. As wth anything you purchase from Orvis.....if not 100% completely satisfied, you may return or exchange."

Very Good Jacket Overall, 12 December 2008

"I bought this jacket last winter and have been very happy with my purchase. The jacket is very warm and I agree with the other reviewer that the pockets are not ideal for hand warming. I have a narrow build and usually wear size med, and the jacket is snug in the waist/thigh area. This makes it difficult to get thighs from my pants pockets. The jacket fit becomes even tighter when I put gloves or a cell phone in the coat pockets.

Overall, the jacket is very good. If you can deal with the snug fit in the waist/thigh area, then you sould like this jacket."

"This is a very warm coat. No doubt about that. One of the buttons did fall off after two wearings though. That's extra important because the manufacturer often skips a button on their coats. They often leave off the middle chest button.
Only other complaint is that the pockets are not ideal to use as hand warmers so you'll need gloves. Also it's very difficult to get to your pants pockets. If I'm going to the store, I make sure I put my wallet in the coat pocket before leaving the house."

"My complaint with the coat had to do with the dye, which I found came off on my newly purchased ice-green cords which I bought from Orvis. It just seemed to me that as warm and comfortable as the coat was, at that price, it should be close to flawless. Staining other clothes due to mere rubbing up against the fabric failed that criterion in my mind."

"The coat is wonderful. I have been able to shed the thermal shirt and sweater, and yet feel extremely warm. It does extremely well in cold and wind. The insulation it provides is second to none."

Never be cold again, 04 October 2007
By: Stanley from Finger Lakes region, NY

"I haven't felt cold in the winter since I bought this coat. Many of my coats never left my closet last year because this one has such a broad comfort range (sub-zero to about 50 degrees). I never overheat in it - in the car or indoors at the mall. Best winter purchase I've ever made."

"First year in 20 that I haven't had a sore back in winter. The coat's warmth has prevented muscle spasm and the hide's light weight is easy on the neck and shoulders. Great for hiking, strolling, driving - anything! Dark color is also very forgiving."

"I'am very impressed by the warmth of this coat. I no longer have to bundle up in layers, just put the coat on and go outside. I live in Buffalo NY and it gets cold here. Thank you."

"I purchased this coat last fall and have worn it this winter, while living here in Maine. The coat is beautiful and everything it is advertised to be. The quality of construction is great and the hides are well matched. Despite the cold, this coat keeps me warm. My only concern is in taking it off when I go to meetings. I try to keep it close, as I worry someone else will quickly realize what a great coat it is!"
