Ultimate is a Big Word,
23 November 2011
By: AvidUplander

"If Ultimate means loaded with well thought out features, with nice materials and construction, Orvis has hit the nail on the head. Two-way front zipper, three ways to put birds in the game bag, easy access to shells and quality throughout. Got home yesterday from South Dakota and threw it in the washer on with cold water hung overnight and It cleaned up nicely. This is not a hot weather vest as it is quite substantial, but not overweight. Seems like the Ultimate to me."

Does the job,
21 November 2011
By: OldOkie

"My old vest gave out and I needed a new one quickly for an early season pheasant hunt. After on-line comparison shopping, I chose the "Ultimate Upland Vest" as having the best combination of features I was looking for along with the Orvis quality I have come to expect. As things turned out, it was a warm day in the low 60s and that is just about the maximum for comfort in this vest. The heavy cotton fabric is great for wind and briar resistance but walking in it can get a little warm. My only quibble is that--for the price--there were a few small details that should not have been allowed to pass inspection. The right-hand front game pocket was still basted together for about an inch; a zipper pull was sewn to the fabric, and there were a few too many loose ends of thread. None of this compromises the basic integrity of the garment but these are indications of hurried manufacture. I expect a bit more from Orvis."

"This garment hangs like a heavy tarp on the shoulders, so be prepared for a meltdown in mild weather. I took a chance on size XL (size L was on back order 'til next August) - it was cavernous. The front zipper jammed on first try, too. Well short of the mark for the premium price."

"The pros far out way the cons with this vest. It fits well, stands up to the toughest grouse cover. I like the pocket sizes, I keep all my shells in there. The hand warmer pocket is a thoughtful yet never used feature.
The game bag is plenty big and easily accessed. The main reason I bought this vest is because of the lack of snaps, zips and buttons on the front. My shotgun stock used to get marked up with other vests.
However, I am seeing an issue that another reviewer noticed, the snaps that keep the game bag closed have come off somehow. I am left with two holes in the material that make it look shabby. Considering the cost of this vest I am disappointed that this issue is even a factor.

"i agree with an earlier reviewer, this is a well made vest. it is however very hot. i also have to swap it out for a lighter weight vest and that was not made clear on the web site.
the rear bird pockets are slightly hard to reach into,as they are too far back and open at an hard angle.
however, it is thoughtfully made with lined pockets and it is tough and durable."

"I purchased this vest last August and wore it during last year's hunting. It is very nice, well-made, and comfortable - however - it is very warm. I had to switch off to another, lighter vest during several mid-Georgia hunts; even into late October. Overall very happy with it.. I only wish there was a non-blaze version for dove hunting."

"This vest met or exceeded all of my expectations; and my expectations of Orvis are extremely high. Quail season in Eastern North Carolina can be cold, cool or warm, sometimes on the same day. Although this was a Christmas present from my wife, she allowed me to hunt wearing it several times, pre-Christmas. One day was in the high 40’s and the vest was adequately warm over a heavy shirt. The next outing was in the 30’s and the vest was comfortable over a heavier coat.
The pockets provide easy access to shells and the game pouch can be accessed from both front and sides.
I suppose that we hunters should not be concerned with style, but I did look mighty good in the vest. I hardily recommend it.

"I have own this vest for well over 10 years. I have been guiding upland birds in Montana for over 20 years and have worn this vest guiding an average of 55 days a year. Covering an average 6 to 10 miles per day while going through our coulees that consist of wild plum, chokecherries, rose hemp and snowberries and not one time over the years did the vest tear for these thorny bushes... I did finally wear holes in the pockets from carrying extra leads and shells. I found that a size larger than you usually wear is great for packing allot of birds long distances when guiding. And when I got a chance to hunt on my own, it did not hamper the shouldering of the gun. The game bag with the front and back loading makes for easy access, and has held up over all the years. However the zipper on the front has finally given up, but I am having it replaced. It’s hard to retire something that has worked so well for so many years.
Needless to say I purchased a new Ultimate Upland Vest this year! The new vest has an excellent zipper system both on the front and the side loading game bag. Have you ever had to bent down to pick a bird up at your feet, because that day your dog feels like that is where it should go? Only to have two more roll out the opening! That does not happen now. It's a great-looking vest flexible and breathable with just the right amount of orange. The new vest also has chest-high pockets that are good for warming your hands and also has zip closures. With the improvements that Orvis has made over the years to this vest since I bought the first one back in the late 90’s, it will be the last vest I purchase. I have already put 25 days in the field on the new one, however still alternating between the two!

"I own this vest. I've hunted two seasons with this vest. I really want to like this vest. It's a great-looking vest. I've tried everything to like this vest, but the reality is it has some design flaws Orvis needs to address. I think these issues are relatively minor, but still, they should be fixed.
I purchased one -- and had to send it back -- and then had to send back two of the replacements. I've given up and stopped sending the vest back because the same issues keep arising.
First isue: The snap buttons keep falling off, popping off the vest. These are located on the side/rear, which keeps the rear bird pouch closed. For whatever reason, these things don't stay on.
The second issue is the orange fabric on the shoulder pads and the top of the vest. It wears/tears too easily. After two seasons, the fabric is ripped, especially the right shoulder where I tend to rest my o/u, broken, when not hunting.
This vest has a lot of potential, but a few design flaws are holding it back."
